Copy That Converts: How to Write Like You Talk (But Better) post thumbnail image

Have you ever stared at your website or sales page and thought…

“This doesn’t even sound like me”?

You want to sound professional. Polished. Confident.

But somehow… it ends up feeling a little stiff, robotic, or just plain awkward.

Here’s the truth: people don’t connect with perfect.

They connect with real. With warmth. With you.

In today’s episode, I’m going to show you how to write like you talk—but better—so your copy connects faster, builds more trust, and guides your audience to take action.

And stick around, because at the end I’ll share my favorite trick to instantly check if your copy feels “off”—before you ever hit publish.

Let’s Recap: How to Write Like You Talk (But Better)

Why Your Website Copy Might Be Missing the Mark

Have you ever read your own website copy and thought, “This doesn’t even sound like me”? You’re not alone. As business owners, we often fall into the trap of trying to sound “professional” or “polished,” only to end up with copy that feels stiff, robotic, and disconnected from our authentic voice. The truth is, this approach might actually be hurting your conversion rates and pushing potential clients away.

People Don’t Connect with Perfect—They Connect with You

The most powerful realization I’ve had in my 20+ years as a website strategist is this: people don’t connect with perfect—they connect with you. Your authentic voice is one of your biggest assets in building trust with your audience. When visitors feel like you’re speaking directly to them rather than at them, they’re much more likely to take action. This human connection is essential for building the trust necessary for someone to work with you or purchase from you.

How to Capture Your Authentic Voice

So how do you make sure your website copy sounds like you? Start by literally speaking your message out loud. Record yourself explaining what you do, who you help, and what you offer. Then transcribe that recording and shape it into your website copy.

  • Use contractions like “you’re” and “we’re” to sound conversational.
  • Break long sentences into shorter, punchier ones for readability.
  • Focus less on grammar perfection and more on clear, natural communication.

Choose Clarity Over Cleverness

Another critical principle is choosing clarity over cleverness. Many business owners try to sound smart or creative with their copy, but this rarely works. Instead of vague, jargon-filled statements like:

“Empower your business with scalable solutions,”

opt for clear, specific language like:

“We help you get more clients with less stress.”

The latter immediately communicates value in a way anyone can understand. Avoid empty phrases like “we offer a variety of services” or “our goal is to help you reach your full potential.” These could apply to virtually any business. Get specific about what you do and how it helps.

Embrace the Power of Rewriting

Remember that great copy isn’t written—it’s rewritten. Your first draft should feel messy, and that’s completely normal. Let your thoughts flow naturally, then go back and clean it up:

  • Remove repetitive phrases.
  • Shorten long sentences.
  • Strengthen your calls to action.

Small wording changes can lead to significant improvements in conversion rates. Instead of passive CTAs like “submit,” use stronger options like “get my free guide” or “book my spot.”

The Best Friend Test

Before publishing any copy, use what I call the “best friend test.” Read your copy out loud as if you’re talking to your best friend. Would you actually say those words to them? If not, adjust until it sounds natural. Your best friend would likely give you a confused look if you said, “Our purpose is to deliver scalable business solutions.”

Talk to your audience the way you talk to someone you care about, and they’ll feel that authenticity and connection. This simple test can save you from publishing copy that sounds stilted or inauthentic.

Bringing It All Together

By embracing your authentic voice, prioritizing clarity, and editing thoughtfully, you can create website copy that genuinely connects with your audience and guides them toward taking action. You don’t need to sound like anyone else—the most effective copy sounds like you, just a bit more focused and confident.

Start applying these principles today, and watch as your website begins converting more effectively through the power of authentic communication.
